Chili Cook-Off
All contestants welcome!

Organized each spring by the Decatur Community Club, the annual Chili Cook-Off is a popular local event for chili enthusiasts, with categories like People’s Choice, Specialty Chili, and Judges’ Award.
Each entrant pays an entry fee and prepares one pot of chili. After judging, the public is invited to purchase their own taste from the contestants. Winners of first through third place receive trophies.
The event raises funds for community projects.

Clean-Up Decatur Day

In early May, community members and volunteers gather for Clean-Up Decatur Day. Dumpsters are brought in so residents can discard items too big for weekly garbage pickup. These include old tires, furniture, appliances, and even abandoned cars! For residents unable to get items to the dumpsters, a phone call will bring a volunteer to pick them up curbside. The event is often combined with Tox-Away Day for collection of hazardous waste (paint, electronics, batteries, etc.).
It’s just one way Decatur is working to keep the community looking proud!

Memorial Day Weekend & Alumni Banquet

Memorial Day weekend at the end of May offers several activities in Decatur.
Memorial Day is observed with a program sponsored on alternate years by the VFW Post, the American Legion Post, and their auxiliaries. The program is held at Hillcrest Cemetery, which is decorated to honor veterans.
The weekend is also time for the annual High School Alumni Banquet. Alumni from all graduating classes gather for a shared dinner program. The 25-year and 50-year classes are honored, with the 25-year class planning events. Many classes hold their own get-togethers this weekend.
